The health department warned a West Side restaurant to clean up its act. McDonald’s fired two workers for sticking candy inside of a customer’s sandwich. And we honor a Mexican restaurant with the coveted NBC 4 Up to Code Award.

In March, Tom Sussi told you about La Plaza Tapatia, 4233 Shoppers Lane. Inspectors uncovered 23 violations including seven critical ones.

Well, the Franklin County Health Department just issued the restaurant a Warning Letter. So far this year, La Plaza Tapatia has had six inspections for a total of 61 violations, 18 of them critical.

On June 5, inspectors found 32 violations including 10 critical ones. Like enormous amounts of uncovered and unwrapped food; cooling units not holding proper temperature; ice machine and kitchen equipment in need of cleaning; and mouse droppings.

A manager with the restaurant emailed Sussi, “I feel sorry for all of the issues but I assure you that we will take care of all of them.” If not, the restaurant faces an administrative hearing with the health department.

A piece of candy was reportedly found inside of a customer’s McChicken. It’s gotten a lot of play on social media. Sussi checked it out, and turns out, it actually happened at a Vinton County McDonald’s.

A McDonald’s spokesperson says the two young employees did it on a dare, and were immediately fired.

This week’s coveted NBC 4 Up To Code Award goes to Chile Verde, 1533 Gemini Place.
